What is your position at Hey Mate / Mate Studio?
Counsellor!
Could you share some highlights from your creative industry experience before joining Hey Mate?
I really leaned into my name and became a bit of a Jack-Of-All-Trades to stay versatile (working) in this ever-evolving industry of ours. An actor first and foremost; I have training and credits in musical theatre/plays, dabbled in stand-up comedy, wrote and directed short plays, acted in short films, puppeteered for stage and screen, gave YouTube a go (cringe), toured the country in educational performances and was a television presenter/producer on kids tv. As well as a lot of downtime and ‘muggle jobs’ peppered throughout!
Which aspect of your work at Hey Mate ignites your passion, and what makes it so meaningful to you?
I believe artists and creatives go through very specific mental health hurdles and that a certain level of shared experience goes a long way. By combining my passion for the arts and my training in mental health I hope to provide a safe space for the people who put their heart and soul into art which allows so many others to escape their own problems.
If you could champion one change in the creative industry, what would it be and how would it make a difference?
I would love to see people get paid industry rates for their efforts. Too much of our time, energy and talents are supplied but not compensated properly. Pay your artists what they’re worth.
Everyone has a story; what’s a quirky or unexpected chapter / fact from yours?
If you google ‘Crocamole’ - that’s me. A VERY unexpected chapter!
Reflecting on the guidance you’ve received over the years, which piece of advice stands out and continues to influence you today?
Be kind to everyone. During my theatre training I was taught to be kind to everyone as you never know when you may work with them. Going one step further than this rather transactional perspective, I simply believe people thrive when offered kindness. It takes nothing and gives so much.
